Back Up Your F-150 Before Any FORScan Change

Save every module's As-Built data first. It is the only undo button you have.

FORScan changes are written straight into your truck's control modules. There is no "factory reset" button inside FORScan, and a dealer will charge for diagnosis if you can't explain what you changed. Your As-Built backup is the undo button. Make it before you change a single bit, and make it again after every session you like.

What As-Built data is

Every Ford module stores configuration blocks (the "As-Built" data) that tell it which features the truck was built with. FORScan shows these blocks as rows like 726-44-01, where 726 is the module address (the BCM), and the hex values are switches and settings. See How As-Built data works for the full breakdown.

Step by step

  1. Charge and maintain the battery. Connect a battery maintainer so the 12 V battery stays above roughly 12.5 V for the whole session. On a PowerBoost, keep the truck plugged into the maintainer rather than relying on the hybrid system.
  2. Connect FORScan. Plug your adapter into the OBD-II port, turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF, open FORScan for Windows and click Connect. Let it identify every module.
  3. Save the full As-Built set. Open the Configuration and Programming tab. For each module (BCM, IPC, APIM, ABS, PSCM, IPMA and the rest), open As-Built Format and use the Save button to write the module's data to a file. Name files with your VIN, the module and the date.
  4. Also save the original Ford As-Built. Ford's factory As-Built data for your VIN can be downloaded from the Motorcraft Service As-Built page. Keep it with your FORScan backups as a second reference for how the truck left the factory.
  5. Copy backups off the laptop. Store the folder somewhere safe: cloud storage, a USB drive, and email to yourself. A backup that only lives on the laptop that dies tomorrow is not a backup.
  6. Change one module at a time. Make one change, write it, reset the module if FORScan asks, verify the feature, then move on. If something misbehaves you know exactly what caused it.

How to restore

To undo a change, open the same module's As-Built Format view, use Load to open your backup file, then Write. Turn the ignition off for at least 30 seconds, then on again, and confirm the module comes up without new trouble codes. If a module won't respond, stop, charge the battery, and read What to do if a FORScan write goes wrong.
