Best FORScan Adapters for the F-150: OBDLink EX vs MX+
Which OBD-II adapter to buy for FORScan, and why cheap ELM327 clones cause trouble.
FORScan recommends the OBDLink EX for FORScan for Windows and the OBDLink MX+ for FORScan Lite on phones, and it no longer recommends generic "ELM327" adapters.
Quick pick
OBDLink EX (USB) ↗
The adapter FORScan recommends for Windows. Wired USB, switches HS-CAN and MS-CAN automatically, no dropped Bluetooth connection mid-write. Get this one if you plan to program.
OBDLink MX+ (Bluetooth) ↗
FORScan's recommended Bluetooth adapter for FORScan Lite on iPhone and Android, and a great everyday code reader. Works with FORScan for Windows too, but wired is safer for big writes.
NOCO GENIUS10 battery maintainer ↗
Keeps the 12 V battery steady while the ignition is on for long reads, writes and module updates. Low voltage mid-write is the most common way to corrupt a module.

Why not a $10 ELM327?
Many cheap clones can't reach Ford's medium-speed CAN (MS-CAN) bus where body and comfort modules live, need a manual switch that's easy to get wrong, or drop the connection mid-write. A failed write is far more expensive than the adapter.
USB vs. Bluetooth
Use USB (OBDLink EX) for As-Built writes, module programming and anything long. Bluetooth (OBDLink MX+) is convenient for reading codes and live data from your phone with FORScan Lite.
