How to Install FORScan and Get the Extended License
Download FORScan for Windows, install your adapter driver, and unlock configuration with the free trial Extended License.
FORScan is a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Mazda scan tool that reads module-level trouble codes and, with the Extended License, edits As-Built configuration. It's the tool behind almost every F-150 "mod code" you'll see online.
Which version do I need?
- FORScan for Windows (free, standard license): full diagnostics. With the free Extended License trial it adds configuration and programming. This is the one you need for mods.
- FORScan Lite (paid app for iOS and Android): diagnostics and live data on your phone. FORScan notes some functions are missing compared with Windows, and configuration and programming are Windows-only.
Setup
- Get a Windows laptop. Configuration and programming are only available in FORScan for Windows. A modest laptop is fine; keep it on its charger during sessions.
- Download FORScan. Download the current FORScan for Windows installer from the official forscan.org download page and install it. Only use forscan.org; repackaged copies elsewhere can carry malware.
- Install your adapter. For the OBDLink EX, plug it into USB and let Windows install the driver (or install the driver from OBDLink). Note which COM port it uses. Bluetooth adapters need pairing first.
- Request the Extended License. FORScan's standard license covers diagnostics. Configuration and programming need the Extended License. In FORScan, open About, use the free trial license link (it passes your Hardware ID), and follow the instructions on forscan.org. The trial runs for two months and can be requested again when it expires.
- Load the license and connect. Load the license key from the About screen, restart FORScan, plug the adapter into the truck, turn the ignition on, and click Connect.
Model-year support
FORScan lists Ford support for 1996 through the 2024 model year, describes support for 2021–2024 vehicles as limited, and says operation on 2025+ vehicles is not guaranteed. Check the FORScan forum for your exact truck before buying anything.
