What to Do If a FORScan Write Goes Wrong

Module not responding, new warning lights, or a feature stopped working: calm, ordered recovery steps.

Most failed writes are recoverable if you have a backup and stop before making things worse.

  1. Stop and charge. Don't retry repeatedly. Connect a battery maintainer and let voltage recover above 12.5 V.
  2. Reconnect. Close FORScan, unplug and replug the adapter, turn the ignition off for a minute, then back on and reconnect.
  3. Reload your backup. Open the affected module's As-Built Format view, load your backup file and write it back.
  4. Reset and clear codes. Run the module reset FORScan offers, cycle the ignition, then read and clear DTCs across all modules.
  5. Ask for help. Post your truck year, module and exactly what you changed on the FORScan forum. If a module still won't communicate, a dealer can reprogram it, so bring your backup file.

No backup? Download your VIN's factory As-Built data from Ford's Motorcraft Service As-Built page and use it as the reference to restore the affected module's blocks.
